Take a quick hit
by J. Freeman

Welcome to 2002 and I'm still on the couch wondering about it all. So let's get started.

Only in America: Mariah Carey signs a contract with Virgin (insert your own joke here) for $21 million dollars. She then proceeds to release "Glitter" a movie that you can still smell if you go to a theatre that was playing it and of course a companion cd of the alleged "music from the film", which also went in the tank. So instead of getting pressure from her label to come up with a hit record to justify her big long term contract they decide to "buy her out" and give her a lovely parting gift of $28 million. So for her mediocre performance she was rewarded $49 million dollars!!  It's food for thought: I'm going about my career all wrong. Maybe to get that big raise or early retirement at work I will start working less until they will pay me to leave.

Can't get it right: The record companies, once again prove the are not your friend. In an attempt to come up with a subscription model for internet downloads they have the following two subscription plans: One, on-demand streaming ó where a user can click to hear a song, but not download it. The second features limited downloads that stop working after a period of time or after they've been played a certain number of times.
For instance, when MusicNet ó a joint venture between Warner Music Group, BMG Entertainment and EMI Recorded Music ó launches later this year via partners AOL and RealNetworks, it plans to offer monthly subscriptions, which allow users to download a set number of songs for a 30-day period. You can download the song you but can't transfer it to cd or another device. Plus if you unsubscribe to the service the songs will expire and not play. This is brilliant stuff!! You pay them for music that you can't either download or if you can download it you can't do anything with it but play it on your computer!!  I still hold to the fact if they would just make the price of cds reasonable then people wouldn't feel so compelled to rip off the record labels.  So in that spirit I'd like to recommend you use LimeWire (free download at: www.limewire.com) to continue to download tunes you can use as you see fit from the internet until the price of cds drops.

Reviews: This feature will return next month as I begin the 2002 search for music that matters, wish me luck.
