The Top Ten Movies I Should Have Seen in 2001
Okay, I donít go to the movies because itís easier for me to make fun of them without
actually seeing them. But now that the yearís over, I think I mightíve missed something
by not watching at least a few of the films that came out. Here are my picks for the flicks
I should rent sometime and maybe even watch all the way though.

(A movie is eligible if it was in theaters in 2001 and choices are listed in order
they were reviewed.).

OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? - I just have a problem with George Clooney being the biggest actor in the movie business. But people I know and tolerate say this is a good movie and I must admit the soundtrack is pretty damn impressive. I think a friend of mine has this on DVD. Maybe Iíll borrow it and keep it around until the urge hits me to watch it.

SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE - What if the actor who played Nosferatu in the movie did such a good job because he really was a vampire? Sounds like an intriguing premise. But it also sounds like one of those movies you really have to pay attention to in order to understand it. Better have my Count Floyd tapes on hand just in case I get bored.

MOULIN ROUGE - Again Iíve had people tell me this is a really great movie even though it looks kind of silly to me. Should give it a chance, I guess. Then again, most of the people who raved to me about it are chicks.

A.I. - Spielberg and Kubrick. Now thereís a combination for you. And I hear this isnít a predictable happy-go-lucky piece of sentimental fluff like E.T.

APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX - The classic Vietnam epic with extra scenes. Guess what? Iíve had people tell me they detract from the film! Well, I should judge for myself, right? And besides, this will tide me over until Daniel Waters gets the money he needs to film Skatetown, Vietnam.

AMERICAN SWEETHEARTS & SERENDIPITY - Both are romantic comedies starring my current favorite actor John Cusack. The former may be a bit too Hollywood for Chicagoís very own but the latter gets extra points for having Jeremy Piven as the best buddy. And for the sake of the top ten limitations, Iím cheating and counting these two movies as one choice.

JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK - Can these two zany characters sustain the laughs for an entire movie? They can if Iím sitting on the couch drinking beer while I watch them. But thatís the way I feel about all the Kevin Smith movies Iíve seen. Theyíre good but uneven. Or maybe I just donít get some of the jokes because Iím not a grown man who still reads comic books.

GLITTER - It has to be a hoot, right? Or maybe itís too awful to be unintentionally funny. But like someone driving past a tangled wreck on the highway, I just gotta look.

ALI - Well, this one just came out at the end of the year and I was too busy with the holiday routine to go out and see it. The one thing that might ruin for me is Jon Voight as Howard Cosell. He got a Golden Globe nomination and some great reviews but when I see him in the TV ads for the movie he reminds me of Martin Short doing one of those Short Takes on A&E

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS - Another year end biggie and brought to you by the people responsible for Rushmore. Iíll still probably wait until the video comes out, so I can laugh as loud as I want and not disturb the dumbasses who donít get it.
