Thursday
The LakinLand version of Must See TV, with only two hours of programming
devoted to NBCís version. Yeah, itís hard to believe I took a pass on Madman
of the People, Jessie, The Single Guy and Cursed, but thereís only so many
hours on the schedule and I have to draw the line somewhere, right?
7:30 - BATMAN
The evening opens up with the conclusion of last nightís episode at the same
bat time, same bat channel. Did the Dynamic Duo get frozen alive in a giant
frosty freezy milk shake? Tune in and find out.
8:00 - CHEERS
Itís the place where everybody knows your name and nobody has anything
better to do than hang out in a bar all night long and guzzle beer. We opt
for the Diane Chambers years, of course, and ask that the post Sam & Diane
episodes be kept in a safe place where we canít find them and run one by
accident. Perhaps Veronicaís Closet would be a good hiding place. No one
would ever look there.
8:30 - NEWS RADIO
In a perfect world, Phil Hartman is still alive, this series is moved to
Thurday nights and it finds an audience because itís a funny show
sandwhiched in between two other funny shows. Oh wait, this is LakinLand and
it is a perfect world! Never mind.
9:00 - SEINFELD
Itís hard to pinpoint the exact moment when this show jumped the shark, but
the episode where Kramer matched wits with a chimp might be a good place to
start the investigation. Yet Iím willing to ignore the last few subpar
seasons and an overlong final episode because the first four or five years
of this series produced show after show of sitcom perfection. And as far as
building new shows around former Seinfeld cast members - thatís a contest
nobody won.
9:30 - THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW
Comedian Gary Shandling stars as the host of a fake talk show that has more
laughs in thirty mintues than most real talk shows provide in a complete
hour. Jeffrey Tambor is Hank "Hey Now" Kingsley, the pathetic boot licking
sidekick and Rip Taylor is Artie, Larryís scene stealing producer, protector
and confidant. Since this show was on HBOÆ, you donít have to worry about
any real commercials interrupting the fun, just the fake ones Larry and Hank
are forced to do for the Garden Weasel. And remember, Larry is very
sensitive, so no flipping!!
10:00 - HILL STREET BLUES
The landmark ensemble police drama that somehow spawned Beverly Hills Buntz
and gave Steven Bochco the courage to create Cop Rock. It also collected 26
Emmy Awards in its seven year run and was the first series to occupy the
coveted 10 p.m. slot of NBCís Must See TV lineup.
